EdTech Inside the Classroom

Glancing Ahead at the iNACOL Symposium 2018: What We’re Looking Forward to!

With only a few days left until the iNACOL Symposium 2018, we’re breaking down for you what’s new, and what to look forward to at this year’s national show.

Each year, educators from all over the world gather to explore next-gen learning for K–12 students at the iNACOL Symposium. This year’s symposium will take place in Nashville’s Music City Center, and kicks off Sunday, October 21st with full- and half-day pre-conference workshops. These workshops will bring together small groups of people to engage in in-depth conversations and gain a better understanding of personalized, competency-based learning. The iNACOL Symposium 2018 continues through Wednesday, October 24th, and will provide ample networking opportunities, keynote speakers, and sessions for all 3,500+ attendees. This year’s theme is “Driving the Transformation of Learning,” and you’ll be able to choose between hundreds of stimulating sessions unique to your personal path of professional development. You’ll also hear from several industry-leading keynote speakers throughout the symposium. Opening keynotes are on Monday and Tuesday from 8:00 am to 9:15 am, following breakfast. Then, while enjoying your lunch, sit in on the Luncheon Keynotes from 12:15 pm to 2:00 pm. And finally, to wrap-up the conference, the closing keynote will be on Wednesday from 10:45 am to 11:45 am.

What is Personalized, Competency-Based Learning?

New this year, iNACOL is turning their focus to personalized, competency-based learning. Competency-based learning focuses on ensuring students are mastering academic content, not taking into account time, place, or pace of learning. Once students have demonstrated mastery of the current concepts and skills they are working on, they will advance to the next concept. Competency-based strategies give students flexibility in the way credit can be awarded, thus opening the door to many personalized learning opportunities. This year, iNACOL is giving educators the valuable opportunity to get a deeper understanding of what competency-based learning is and how you can implement it to enhance your school or district.

Stop by the New Innovation Corner

Located in the Davidson Ballroom, the Innovation Corner is another fresh new experience iNACOL is bringing to the symposium this year. This new concept will replace the standard exhibit hall you may remember from past years. The Innovation Corner is a space where you can see firsthand how schools are using personalized, competency-based models and tools, as well as ask questions and learn from each other. This specific area offers attendees a chance to visit the School Showcase, Tools Showcase, Student Showcase, and Sponsor Showcase spaces. At these different spaces, you’ll hear from successful schools about how they’re implementing competency-based learning, and you’ll also have the opportunity to hear from students themselves, chat with us at our Showcase space, and much more!

Stay Connected and Share on Social Media

If you are unable to attend, find out what’s going on in Nashville by staying connected to the conference through Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, or YouTube using the hashtag #inacol18. And be sure to look for the pictures and updates on iNACOL Symposium 2018, too!

We hope to see you in Nasvhille!
